What is a medal?

A medal or medallion is a compact, typically made of metal, the artistic object that may be carried around. It typically has a design on both sides. They frequently serve some sort of commemorative function, and many are given out as rewards. Though it hasn't always been the case, they may be made to be worn or suspended in some form from jewelry or clothing. They can be die-cast in a mold or struck like coins by dies.

A medal may be given to a person or group as a token of appreciation for accomplishments in a variety of fields, including sports, the military, science, culture, and education. Certain sorts of state decorations are more precisely referred to as "military awards and decorations."

Additionally, medals may be produced for retail sale to honor certain people or occasions or as independent artistic expressions. In the past, commissioning a medal for an individual—usually with their portrait—was frequently done as a type of diplomatic or personal present, with no expectation that the recipient would be recognized for their conduct.

Medallions are larger, starting at about four inches across, and as such are usually too large to be worn very comfortably, though in colloquial use, the term "medallion" is often used to refer to a medal used as the pendant of a necklace (as in the medallion man fashion style of the 1960s and 1970s) or for other types of medals. Medallions are also referred to as "table medals" since they are too large to wear and must be placed on a wall, tabletop, desk, or cabinet.
